David Tilson MP — Federal government is marking Cyber Security Awareness Month Many of us now use the internet on our computers and smartphones to perform a wide variety of daily tasks, including online banking and shopping; e-mailing friends and family; and to participate in the various forms of social networking.There are many benefits from these resources available to us; however, there can also be many risks associated if we're not aware and taking the necessary precautions. October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, which is a perfect time to reflect on what we can do to stay cyber safe. Cyber security matters to everyone, every day. We often hear stories about how vulnerable computers are to viruses, how we all need to protect our personal information online, and how internet fraudsters continue to target the vulnerable. Unfortunately, with one false click of a mouse, we can lose money, assets, even our very identities. It all might seem overwhelming, but there are many quick and easy things we can do to protect ourselves and our loved ones online. For that reason, the government of Canada created GetCyberSafe.ca, a one-stop resource with information about online risks and the simple steps we can take to protect ourselves and our devices. There, you will find the various types of online risks; a printable brochure with key tips on staying safe online, as well as other helpful publications; a Get Cyber Safe Blog; videos; and information on how to recover from a cyber incident if you believe you have become a victim. The GetCyberSafe.ca website is one of the ways our government is working hard to help Canadians stay cyber safe. It's an important part of Canada's Cyber Security Strategy, which is our government's plan to meet the cyber threat by working together with provinces, territories, and private industry to protect Canada's digital infrastructure. It is built on three pillars which include: securing government systems, partnering to secure vital cyber systems outside the federal government and helping Canadians to be secure online. Our government is continuously working to enhance cyber security in Canada by identifying cyber threats and vulnerabilities, and by preparing for and responding to all kinds of cyber incidents to better protect Canada and Canadians. To ensure a continued secure, reliable and uninterrupted service, we have enhanced the security of government networks and systems to protect against malicious cyber threats. This will increase protection for the private information of Canadians, Canadian businesses and government information processed through our systems. We can all benefit from being safer online.
