Crowd was out to walk along the runway for Bethell By Bill Rea The figures have not yet been finalized, but it appears the second annual Light Up the Runway Walk at Brampton Flight Centre (BFC) was a big success. Held to raise money and awareness of Bethell Hospice, the event saw participant walk the main runway at BFC (roughly 3,500 feet), and then back again. The walk took place last Thursday night after dark, and the runway was lined on both sides with candles. Numerous groups and individuals, including Mayor Allan Thompson put teams together to take part. BFC Controller Daphne Parsons, who organized the event, announced at the start that it looked like they had passed the $20,000 mark. She also acknowledged the contribution of corporate sponsors, including Peel Mutual Insurance, DTZ and Thomas Carberry insurance. She also thanked all the participants. “You are special for coming out, for caring and donating to a great cause,” she remarked. “You guys rock!” BFC President Chris Pulley was impressed with how the event has taken off in two years. He said they had been hoping to raise $5,000 last year, and it ended up being closer to $15,000. “This has really taken on a life of its own,” he said. Pulley also stressed the importance of Bethell Hospice in Inglewood, which is the only residential hospice serving the Caledon, Brampton, Dufferin County and West Woodbridge areas, providing essential services such as bereavement, grief counselling, palliative and hospice care, all free of charge. He added they perform very important services with compassion, care and love. As well, he praised Parsons for making it all happen. “This has been her brain child,” he observed. “A little idea from Daphne has turned into a great big event for Bethell Hospice.” Tricia Cain, a member of the board of the Bethell Hospice Foundation, expressed their appreciation for the support, and the way BFC is giving back to the community. She explained government funding covers about 60 per cent of the cost to run the programs at Bethell. The rest, amounting to about $1 million annually, has to be raised. She also described the facility, commenting that it has 10 private rooms, each with a wide door accessing the garden. It offers personalized care, and is assisted by more than 200 volunteers. Families are encouraged to visit, and that includes pets. “I know first-hand what a special place Bethell Hospice is,” Cain remarked, recalling her sister was there in 2012. That was why she joined the board. Thompson commented just about everyone has experiences with a family member needing services of a hospice facility. “It is one of the jewels that we have that's very important to our community,” he said.  Bethell Hospice Foundation Board member Tricia Cain thanked Brampton Flight Centre for supporting the facility's efforts.  Kontact consists of Andrew Boettger on bass, Mitchell Greenham on drums and Matthew Boettger on keyboards. The Caledon performers were providing music before the Light Up the Runway event. 
 There was a large crowd of people out for an evening stroll along the main runway at Brampton Flight Centre. The event was the second annual Light Up the Runway Walk, in support of Bethell Hospice. Mayor Allan Thompson and his wife Anne were there to cut the ribbon to start the walk. |
