Coyotes go undefeated in Markham Stouffville Starfest Tournament

The inaugural Caledon Coyotes atom girls' rep team proved to be a powerhouse at its first tournament over the weekend, going undefeated to take the gold.
They came on strong in the first game against the Flamborough Falcons. Breanna Hifawi lit up the score board with a hat trick, with assists by Chantal Patterson, Orly Ferris and Hayley McNaney. Christina Catanzariti hammered one in the net, assisted by Riley Lane. Cyanne John fired in another while Rachel Samson held strong on defence. McNaney and Ferris each added goals in the third as the Coyotes cruised to a 7-0 win.
In the second game, the Coyotes battled to a scoreless draw in an exciting game against the Burlington Barracudas.
The girls' confidence continued to build as they took to the ice to face the always powerful Brampton Canadettes. The Coyotes struck early and often on single tallies by Riley Lane and Catanzariti, as well as a pair by Aysia Maurice. Patterson chipped in another, assisted by Amelia Rappoccio. John finished the scoring in the third, assisted by Morgann Symons as the Coyotes won 6-1.
In the semifinal, the Coyotes faced the North York Storm.
The Coyotes, playing with speed and creativity, set up Hifawi and John for back-to-back goals. Sami Marto's shot eluded all defenders and the goalie for a 3-0 win and a trip to the Gold Medal game. Goalies Grace Davey and Lilah Drew combined to earn their third shutout of the tournament.
The final game was an intense showdown with the also undefeated Burlington. The Baracudas jumped out to an early lead, but the Coyotes clawed back with two goals by Leah Hanrahan on set-ups by Catanzariti. Lane's second goal of the tournament put the game out of reach and Coyotes emerged with a 3-1 gold medal win.
It was a very competitive tournament and this first Caledon Coyote atom rep team really stepped up to the challenge.
The Caledon Coyotes Girls Hockey League continues to grow and offers exciting hockey opportunities at both the House League and Rep level.
