Carol Seglins is Caledon’s 2023 Senior of the YearFormer Caledon Mayor keeps busy volunteering with a variety of community organizations By Zachary Roman On June 20, Mayor Annette Groves and Caledon Council presented Caledon resident of over 50 years, Carol Seglins, with the Senior of the Year Award. According to the Town of Caledon, each year the award is handed out to a senior “who, after age 65, enriches the social, cultural, or civic life of the community.” In handing out the award, Groves gave her sincerest congratulations to Seglins and said it's active and involved community members like her that make Caledon such a great place to live. Seglins said she was surprised but honoured to receive the award. Seglins is a former Mayor of Caledon, having served three terms from 1994 to 2003. She is currently the president of the Humber Valley Heritage Trail Association (HVHTA) and a director of the Albion Bolton Historical Society (ABHS). With the HVHTA, Seglins leads maintenance initiatives, promotes the trail to the community, and works closely with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. “We're working on really having more and more people walking on our trail… I'm very happy to be a part of this group,” said Seglins. Seglins is working on connecting with local schools to see if high school students would like to get their volunteer hours by helping maintain the trail. She said hiking is a great thing and she'd like to see more young people out doing it. With the ABHS, Seglins helps manage historical findings and artifacts while also helping plan events. She said it's a very interesting organization to be a part of and that she's really enjoying being a part of it. “It's wonderful to find out more about the history, because the more you do, the more you get involved,” said Seglins. Seglins is also a volunteer and board member with the Caledon Seniors Centre (CSC) and Bolton and District Probus Club. At the CSC, she supports various initiatives for those ages 55 and up by fundraising. At Probus, Seglins is a member of the club's program committee and assists in organizing guest speakers, book clubs and social outings. With all her community involvement, Seglins said she doesn't find much time for herself — but that's the way she likes it. “It keeps you busy and healthy… I think people should volunteer,” she said. “Share your experience and your knowledge so you can learn more yourself, and you can help others have happier lives too.” |
