Caledon to lose two seats at Regional table in 2022

Caledon will lose two voices from the Regional Council table following the 2022 Municipal Election.

The decision was made on December 17 for Brampton to gain two seats at the Peel Regional Council table at the expense of Caledon.

What began as a walk on motion at the November 26 Regional Council meeting is now an approved bylaw.

Caledon Council has consistently supported Brampton gaining more representatives at Regional Council since 2015 but was not prepared to lose two of their own in the process.

Regional Council is made up of 24 members of the three municipalities of Caledon, Brampton and Mississauga: Mississauga with 12 members, Brampton at seven and Caledon at five.

With the new bylaw underway, Mississauga will remain with 12 members, Brampton will be increased to nine and Caledon left with three representatives.

“The actions being taken today to remove seats from Caledon all but silence our voice at the table,” remarked Mayor Allan Thompson before the approval. “This isn't about fair representation because we all know the difference between urban and rural representation, it's about power and control.”
