Caledon residents honoured for environmental work

Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) honoured community members at its annual Friends of the Credit Conservation Awards recently at BraeBen Golf and Country Club in Mississauga.
More than 70 guests were in attendance, including representatives from CVC's Board of Directors.
Former Caledon mayor Marolyn Morrison was honoured with a Conservation Award of Excellence for her contributions as Chair of the Credit Valley Conservation Foundation (CVCF). As a serving member of the Board for 15 years, Morrison helped raise $3.5 million in support of CVC's work. Her leadership and commitment was instrumental for projects such as the Island Lake Community Trail, Conservation Youth Corps and conservation area improvements. Morrison's legacy of green initiatives established Caledon as the Greenest Town in Ontario.
Alton Public School was honoured with a Conservation Award of Distinction for their part in constructing a rain garden at Alton Park. In 2012, students, staff and parents rallied to win a $50,000 grant through the Shell FuellingChange Challenge. The school participated in the design process, selected plants and created art features for the garden. The rain garden is an opportunity for students to learn about biodiversity and the natural water cycle.
Since 1986, CVC has recognized individuals, landowners, community groups, small businesses, corporations, municipalities and agencies in the watershed that have made a positive contribution to the health of the Credit River, the local community and the surrounding land.
