With June honoured as National Indigenous History Month in Canada, the Town of Caledon is holding numerous events and opportunities throughout the month.

The Town of Caledon is encouraging residents to “take part in events and learning opportunities that raise awareness of the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.”

Mayor Annette Groves says that National Indigenous History Month “reminds us of the importance of acknowledging Indigenous culture, traditions and history,”

“It is an opportunity for all of us to learn from Indigenous communities, honour their contributions, and strengthen our commitment to advancing reconciliation,” says Groves.

The events and opportunities kicked off with a Flag Raising and Four Colours Drum Performance at the Town Hall Flagpole on June 15.

Just a few short days later, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation Chief Margaret Sault will speak at the Caledon Day opening ceremony on June 20 at the Caledon East Community Complex.

Also on Caledon Day, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN) will be a featured community partner.

June 21 is also recognized as National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Finally, throughout the month, Mississaugas of the Credit, Ajetance Treaty, No. 19 history and information boards will be on display at the Caledon Centre for Recreation and Wellness, Caledon East Community Complex, Southfields Community Centre and the Town Hall atrium.
