Caledon Fire Services recognize exemplary and long service


Caledon Fire and Emergency Services recently recognized 18 of its members with the Canadian Federal Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal and Service Bars.
As well, they were presented with Ontario Provincial Fire Services Long Service Medals and Service Bars.
The presentation was performed by Mayor Marolyn Morrison and Fire Chief Dave Forfar, to recognize each for their dedication to the Canadian fire services.
Federal Exemplary Service Medals were presented to members who have completed 20 or more years of exemplary service; members were further recognized for each additional 10 year intervals with bars affixed to the medal ribbon. Provincial Long Service Medals were presented to members who have completed 25 or more years of service; members were further recognized for each additional five-year intervals with bars affixed to the medal ribbon.
Those recognized for 20 years included Captain Rick Capel (presented posthumously to the Capel family), Firefighter Richard Dodwell, Firefighter Gary Green, Assistant District Chief Colin Hanna, Captain Geoff Hoar, Firefighter Mike Melnyk, Firefighter Darrin Mottershaw, Firefighter James Van Stralen and Firefighter Don Hillson.
Receiving 25 Year Provincial Long Service Medals were Firefighter Don Hillson and Firefighter John Wilkinson. Hillson also received the 10-year Federal Bar.
The 30-Year Federal Bar was presented to Assistant District Chief Al Livingston, Firefighter George Newhouse and Captain Don Lyons.
The 30-Year Provincial Bar was presented to Captain Don Lyons and Firefighter Roy Howstrawser.
The 35-Year Provincial Second Bar went to District Chief Paul Bebbington, Firefighter Kent Judge and Firefighter Gary Mountain.
The Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal was created Aug. 29, 1985. The medal honours full-time and volunteer members of a recognized Canadian fire service who have completed 20 years, 10 years of which have been served in the performance of duties involving potential risks, and were employed on or after the date of creation of the medal. Recognized fire services include fire departments, fire marshals' offices, fire commissioners' offices and the Canadian Forces fire services. The medal is struck under Letters of Patent from Her Majesty the Queen and issued by the authority of the Governor General of Canada.
The Fire Services Long Service Medals recognize fire services members for their dedication and hard work. First awarded in 1971, the medal is officially recognized by the Province and is included in the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997. Both full-time and volunteer fire department members can qualify for the medal. This medal is struck and issued under the authority of the Ontario Fire Marshal.
