Caledon FC wins home opener in first year in men’s soccer divisionBy Brian Lockhart The Caledon FC senior division club opened the season with a 2-1 home opener win over Croatia Norval under the lights on the soccer pitch at the Caledon East Soccer Complex last Thursday night (May 30). “We finished in first place last year in the U21 division in the South Region OSL,” said Coach Angelo Pennino. “This season, we moved up to the men's division.” The club is a member team of the Ontario Soccer League. Pennino, who has been with the club for the past 14 years, said they have “around seven returning players” from last year's team. The Caledon squad opened the scoring in the first half of last Thursday's game to take an early lead. The second goal came early in the second half, with a shot from the left side of the crease that crossed over the goal line and found the back right hand side of the net. Croatia Norval responded with a goal that came from a tight formation in front of the Caledon net to close the gap, but the home team kept up the pressure to leave with the 2-1 win. Caledon goals came from Ian Wolfe and Daniel Pennino. The move to a higher division can sometimes mean tough seasons for the first couple of years, but Pennino is confident in the team's talent and abilities. “We want to finish in the top four in our first season,” he said. “We've already won a league cup game, then lost one this season.” Despite the fact the team has already entered regular season play, Pennino said the roster has not yet been finalized for this season. “We can be competitive this year,” he said. “I've still got some other players coming on.” With 19 games left on the schedule for 2013, the squad has a long way to go before finding out where they are going to find their place in the standings for this year. The team will travel to Guelph this coming Saturday (June 8) to face the Rangers in a road game. They will return to their home pitch at the Caledon East Soccer Complex June 13, to host the Iraq FC. The kick-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. under the lights. |
