Scott McCrimmon grew up in Caledon East, where he recalls a time with no stop lights, and Burrel’s General Store, which once was where the LCBO now stands.
He spent his years playing hockey, baseball, and soccer with his neighbours, and was in the first graduating class from Robert F. Hall Catholic Secondary School.
Even when he briefly moved away for Chiropractic school, his dream was always to return to Caledon East and open up his own practice in a house on Airport Road.
On February 6, that dream turns 20.
Dr. Scott McCrimmon and his team at Caledon East Family Chiropractic have been serving the Caledon East community for two decades, and this week they’re celebrating with everyone.
Walking into their office, clients will find balloons and banners, raffles, door prizes, and a treat table celebrating their anniversary.
But that’s not all. The office is also filled with hand-coloured celebratory signs from staff and customers, and thank-you books personally filled with testimonials and stories from the past 20 years.
For McCrimmon, he says Caledon East has always been home.
Caledon East Family Chiropractic first opened up the road in the now Foodland Plaza, where it was just McCrimmon and his receptionist, Leslie Savoia, who has now been working with him for 19 years.
For the first ten years, they remained there, until McCrimmon’s vision of his practice in a home on Airport Road became a reality in 2017.
George Jenney, who once operated his law practice out of the home at 15891 Airport Rd, was ready to move, and Caledon East Family Chiropractic was ready to move in.
The renovated 1940s house-turned-practice still has a barn, over a hundred years old, at the back of the property.
McCrimmon remarks that anecdotally, he often sees the barn in the background of people’s photos from historical Caledon East books.
“You go into some doctor’s offices and they’re cold and they’re stale,” says McCrimmon. “But we’re pretty chill and relaxed here, and this fits with us.”
For them, they want their practice to feel like home.
As they reflect on 20 years as a business, the practice is also reflecting on 20 years of their clients.
“I love to get to know people,” says McCrimmon. “I love going to the grocery store, walking down the street and knowing people. I’ve had patients who’ve been coming here since they were three years old as patients, and now they’re getting married or graduating.”
He attributes his love of community involvement to growing up in a small town, where he remains actively involved – not just in his practice, but also as a coach with the Caledon Hawks and, previously, in baseball, soccer, and lacrosse.
Looking back on 20 years of business, McCrimmon says it’s been extremely rewarding.
Pulling out pictures for their anniversary, he notes they were hanging pictures of kids who are now grown up, and continue to come back.
“It gives you a sense of pride to be around and be able to help the community like that. I never had a vision of how long I was going to do this for or anything like that, I just enjoy it,” says McCrimmon. “I love helping people.”
Flipping through their testimonial books, he adds that not only does it evoke fond memories, but it also reminds him of all the people they’ve been able to help.
Patients have told stories about how their practice has helped them return to the sports they love, pick up their kids once again, and more.
“It’s nice to know that you’re making a difference for people,” says McCrimmon.
“Our goal is just to help keep Caledon healthy, active and living their healthiest and best life,” he adds.
Over 20 years, the practice has changed in its own ways, adding more chiropractors, osteopaths, naturopaths, and massage therapists, and adapting its services to meet the needs of the Caledon community.
While coaching hockey, McCrimmon dealt with a concussion case at a time when, nearly 15 years ago, Caledon had no local support available. And so, for five years, McCrimmon began to consult with a neurosurgeon who had a concussion practice, as well as taking courses on his own, to ensure they would be able to help those in the community who got concussions.
“It’s something we weren’t trying to get into,” he explains. “It just happened.”
Now he estimates 15 per cent of their services are concussion-related – especially during the hockey season, he jokingly adds.
Looking ahead to future years, McCrimmon shares he’s extremely content with where they are now, adding, “As long as my body holds out and I can keep doing it, I would love to do another 20 years of it.”
“We can do whatever we do, but if the community doesn’t support you and doesn’t utilize your services, it’s not going to matter,” says McCrimmon. “We’ve had great support from the community for 20 years, which has been amazing, and we appreciate all the patients that have come and have been members of our practice for so long.”
Just that morning, he saw one of his regular patients, who had been going to him for all 20 years.
“It’s pretty neat to see that.”
Standing in the waiting room for the practice, whether you’re admiring the decades-worth of testimonials in their books or taking in the photos of patients throughout the years, it’s clear not only does Caledon East Family Chiropractic love their community, but Caledon seems to love them right back.
