The Caledon community has been hit with the heart-breaking news of the passing of 13-year-old Reese Meyer, who was fighting for the better part of a year against an agressive brain tumour.

Caledon residents, as well as the local hockey community, have stood by and supported Reese and his family since his diagnosis in November. The news came as a blow to hundreds of people in the area, with tributes being posted online, remembering the fun loving boy that Reese was.

Reese's father Glenn took to social media to update family, friends and the community over the weekend, stating, “Reese went to heaven this morning (Oct. 3) at 7:53 a.m. Very peacefully, gently and surrounded by love. He was awake with both eyes open, which we have not seen in a couple of weeks. We were able to spend the early morning together and we will forever cherish that time.”

Though heartbroken, the number 3, like his hockey number, will hold more significance than ever, as he passed on Oct 3.

The Mississauga Steelheads spoke out on social media regarding Reese, as he was honoured at one of their games back in January.

The team stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Meyer family, Caledon Minor Hockey, and all those who were fortunate to call Reese a friend. You will be missed.”

Reese played for the Caledon Hawks, where he played and thrived with his friends and teammates. He made a tremendous impact on the hockey community in Caledon, through his strength and positivity, which will be greatly missed.

“On behalf of the Caledon Golden Hawks Jr. C Hockey Club and the Arsenault Hockey Group, I offer condolences to Reese's family, teammates and the Caledon Minor Hockey Association,” said David Arsenault, President. Arsenault Hockey Group.

Mayor Allan Thompson along with other members of the community mourned the loss of the young Caledon resident.

“The community of Caledon East and the Caledon Minor Hockey Association lost a true champion today with the passing of the young Caledon Hawks number three, Reese Meyer,” said Mayor Allan Thompson. “Our hearts and thoughts are with Reese's family and friends.”
