Caledon Citizen’s Student-Athlete of the Week: Mayfield Mavericks’ Brooklynn Corbett stars in Varsity Flag Football, Volleyball, and Rugby

Brooklynn Corbett's recent run of playoff success is enviable. 

The three-sport athlete from Mayfield Secondary School advanced to the ROPSSAA playoffs in flag football, volleyball, and rugby in 2023-24.

Although the Mavericks were eliminated in the quarterfinals in flag football and volleyball, Corbett's Varsity Girls Rugby team won ROPSSAA.

It was Mayfield's fifth consecutive girls' regional rugby championship and Corbett's impressive run in rugby included provincial championships with the Mavericks in 2022 and 2023.

She expressed her connectivity to this winning tradition at Mayfield: “It's special to be part of this legacy.”

Although the Mavericks flag football team lost in the ROPSSAA quarterfinals this Fall, the three-season athlete is “hoping to compete in the playoffs in volleyball and potentially win another championship in rugby.”

Nominating Mavericks' coach Pamela Ireland explained the exceptional qualities that the Grade 12 Honor Roll student-athlete exhibits at Mayfield Secondary School.

“Brooklynn is adaptable, stays calm, sees the field well, and is an excellent teammate.”

In addition, Coach Ireland noted that Corbett is “involved in a wide variety of extracurricular activities” and demonstrates “Lots of school spirit.”

Coach Ireland described a series of key performance moments on the flag football field to highlight Corbett's athletic prowess.

“Over the last three years, Brooklynn has played offence as both a receiver and QB. When dealing with a shoulder injury that limited her ability to throw, she converted to a front row defence player and excelled quickly. She is important player on her teams because she is a good teammate, works hard, and others follow this example.”  

Brooklynn Corbett took time from her varsity volleyball responsibilities and her Grade 12 studies to answer our newspaper's interview questions: 

Caledon Citizen: What qualities did you demonstrate in your sports season to earn Student-Athlete of the Week honors?

Brooklynn Corbett: “Over the last three years at Mayfield, I've really developed both mentally and physically through sports I had almost no experience with before I came here. It's definitely something that has helped improve my self-confidence and has taught me to be both a good teammate and leader. I'd say I have definitely become a confident, well-rounded athlete.” 

Caledon Citizen: What were your key statistics and performance moments from the 2023-24 season that you are most proud of?

Brooklynn Corbett: “Last year, I made it to the ROPSSAA playoffs for all three teams I was a part of. We were eliminated in the quarter finals in flag football and volleyball, but won ROPSSAA and attended OFSAA for rugby. This was our 5th consecutive ROPSSAA championship in rugby and it is special to be a part of this legacy. This year we again lost out in the quarterfinals in flag football and are hoping to compete in the playoffs in volleyball and potentially win another championship in rugby.”

Caledon Citizen:  In addition to your high school sports team(s), what other community teams do you play for and at what level?

Brooklynn Corbett: “Outside of school, I grew up playing rep hockey in Orangeville until last year. I have recently started playing rugby for North Halton RFC.” 

Caledon Citizen:  How would you describe yourself as a student at Mayfield? To which sports teams and clubs do you belong? Honour Roll?

Brooklynn Corbett: “While attending Mayfield, I've played on varsity sports teams since Grade 9 when I played hockey and started rugby. In Grade 10, I joined the varsity flag football and volleyball teams. I have continued to play flag football, volleyball, and rugby and have proven myself to be a valuable member of each team I've played on. I am proud of being a part of Mayfield's 2022 and 2023 OFSAA winning rugby teams. I am also excited to take part in the rugby tour to Wales this March. Outside of sports, I am a member of Mayfield's Athletic Association and participate in all the school events I can. I also maintain an 80% average in my classes.”

Caledon Citizen: What are your post-secondary plans regarding prospective academic/athletic destinations?

Brooklynn Corbett: “I would like to attend university after graduating, and if the opportunity presents itself, playing a sport at the university level would be an honour.”

Caledon Citizen: Who is your role model in terms of the person you admire the most?

Brooklynn Corbett: “Someone who is definitely a role model to me when it comes to being an athlete is my grandfather, Jim Moxey. He made a career being a competitive hockey player and even made it to the NHL. He is living proof of what hard work in sports can bring and someone I think a lot of people can really learn from.” 

Caledon Citizen:  How do you feel about being nominated as The Caledon Citizen's Student-Athlete of the Week?

Brooklynn Corbett: “I am very appreciative of the nomination and think it's very rewarding after all the work I've put in to my athletics.”
