Brewers take early lead in NDBL championship series

By Brian Lockhart
The North Dufferin Baseball League championship final took a twist over the weekend, when heavy rain Saturday washed out the first game of the best-of-seven series.
The Bolton Brewers and Aurora Jays are playing for the NDBL title, but the first game was called before it even started when it became apparent that the diamond was not going to be in a shape for a ball game.
A downpour early in the day petered out to a drizzle in the afternoon but the damage had already been done and officials cancelled the game, with plan ‘B' going into effect the following day. The match was slated to be played in Aurora with the second game moving to North Hill Park in Bolton Sunday.
Because of the first day cancellation, it was decide that to keep the series on schedule, the teams would play a double header — both games in Aurora — to keep things on track.
Both games were high scoring, with the Brewers winning the first by a single run after leaving with a 9-8 win to lead the series.
After taking a half-hour break, the squads returned for a 5 p.m. start for the second game.
The Brewers did a repeat, scoring another nine runs in the second game while holding the Jays to five.
Going in to the championship series, the Brewers eliminated the Ivy Leafs in a three-game sweep in the first round of playoffs. They followed up with a second sweep over the New Lowell Knights in round two.
The Aurora squad made it to the final with a 3-2 win over Clearview in round one and winning the second round in five games over Orillia.
The series will return to Bolton for game three tonight (Thursday), with the first pitch scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Game four will be back in Aurora Sunday with a 2 p.m. start.
