Brewers drop a deuce, but still on topWritten By JAKE COURTEPATTE The Bolton Brewers may have finally met their match. In the first two meetings of the North Dufferin Baseball League season between the AA Brewers and the New Lowell Knights, the Knights came out on top of both sides of the doubleheader on Sunday. A rematch of the 2017 NDBL Championship series two months in the making, it was last year's runners-up that came out swinging, with New Lowell taking a 2 – 0 lead in the third thanks to a pair of hits and a walk issued by pitcher Tyler Hawkins. Hawkins was tagged with one more in each of the fourth and the fifth innings, while his offense was left scoreless tagging him for the loss when pulled after the fifth inning. Matt Blacklaws was excellent in the closer's capacity, allowing just one hit and no runs in his final inning of work, though New Lowell's Steve Baldry pitched a complete game shutout in a 4 – 0 final. Brett Chater had the only multi-hit outing of the game for the Brewers, going two-for-three in the loss. Andrew White took to the mound in the second half of the doubleheader for the Brewers, looking to solve the Knights bats, though they stayed hot in banging out fourteen hits over six innings of White's work. A three-run fourth inning ultimately sunk the Brewers, who fell 8 – 5, despite another one-hit closing effort from Blacklaws. Mike Wallace crossed the plate twice, while Chater, Chris Fafalios, and Greg Keenan added single runs. Despite back-to-back losses, a stellar first seven weeks of the season still has the Brewers up two points on the Ivy Leafs and three up on the Knights, with a record of 13-2-2. They return to Bolton for a pair of Canada Day weekend matchups, first hosting the Clearview Orioles (10-5-0) Friday night at Ted Houston Park before the Lisle Astros (5-6-2) visit Saturday afternoon. First pitch Friday is set for 6:30p.m. For stats, schedules, and more information, visit www.ndbl.ca. |
