Bolton students on right pathCITIZEN STAFF An actor and a top prize winner from the Canada-Wide Science Fair are among a record number of students from across Canada looking to become change makers this summer at the award-winning enrichment and entrepreneurship program SHAD. Three students from the Bolton, ON area are also among this group and will travel to various locations across Canada on July 1 to participate in the program. This year's SHAD program will take place at a record 16 host university campuses from coast to coast, with students being represented from all 10 provinces and three territories. Founded in 1980 to help exceptional youth reach their full potential, students in grades 10 to 12 are immersed in a one month enrichment program focused on STEAM: science, technology, engineering, arts and math. The students interact with renowned university faculty and visionary corporate leaders, and participate in hands-on workshops and activities. In a unique element of the program, the students are challenged to come up with an original solution to a societal problem affecting Canada that they learn about in the first week. It teaches them about entrepreneurship and innovation and leaves the students seeing how they can make an immediate impact. “We are thrilled that we are reaching a record 1,000 students this year. Support from our partners has allowed us to include more opportunities to transform lives. Our outreach team has been busy spreading the word to youth from different communities who can benefit from a month at SHAD. We are actively working to eliminate barriers and are now reaching into underserved communities,” said SHAD President and CEO Tim Jackson. “We hope program participants end the month not only dreaming big, but empowered with the tools and passion they need to take risks, roll up their sleeves and get going.” Once participants have completed the program, which runs from July 1 to July 27, they will join a vast network of nearly 17,000 SHAD Fellows that are forging the path to a brighter future, including an NHL hockey executive, a NASA researcher, an international best-selling author, and 32 Rhodes Scholars. |
