A fourth-inning three-run homer clinched the first game of the second round North Dufferin Baseball League playoff series for the Bolton Brewers against New Lowell Knights Sunday.
Brett Chater knocked one out of the park to give his mates the three-run lead.
The Knights were leading in the early going, then faltered when the Bolton crew started getting the wood on the bat to expand their lead. Chater did it again in the sixth inning when he hit a triple that brought in another single to give the Brewers five for the game.
New Lowell came close later in the game when they managed to load the bases and bring in a run to make it 5-2. A second run scored on a walk, making it a 5-3 game. But the side retired and the Brewers ended the next inning with no hits, but a two-run lead to take the game and lead the best of five series.
“It was a good game, we hit good,” said Brewer pitcher Mike Blackwood, who threw the entire game. “Our bats finally came alive. We had good defence. I didn't pitch my greatest game, but the team picked me up.”
Blackwood said the fourth inning home run made all the difference.
"That was huge,” he declared. “That was a big turning point.”
After spending seven innings on the mound, Blackwood slowed down, if slightly, toward the end.
“I gave them more hits than they deserved,” he said of the Knights hitting.
The final stretch in the last inning saw a powwow on the mound after New Lowell loaded the bases and brought in the single on a walk.
“The coach came out and told me stay calm and throw strikes — finish the game,” he said.
The series was scheduled to go to New Lowell for the second game Tuesday night, then return to North Hill Park in Bolton Wednesday (results of both games not known at press time).
The other NDBL series has the Aurora Jays playing the Orillia Majors in a best-of-five outing.
That series was scheduled to get underway in Aurora Tuesday.
The winners of the series will meet in the final and vie for the NDBL 2013 championship.
