Bolton and District Horticultural Society looking for members

Did you know that the United Nations' goal is to plant one billion trees worldwide each year?
As part of the United Nations Billion Tree Campaign, Ontario is committed to plant 50 million trees by 2025.
The goal of the 50 Million Tree Program is to sequester carbon; enhance and diversify southern Ontario's landscape; increase adaptive capacity to withstand climate change; moderate local climate by providing shade, moderating temperature extremes and reducing the effects of storms; increase wildlife habitat; increase soil and water conservation, and provide local economic opportunities.
Locally, you can support this initiative by becoming a member of the Bolton and District Horticultural Society. BDHS has been the instigator of several major tree planting projects in Bolton over the past 20 years, investing more than $316,000 in planting projects such as Bolton Mill Park (221 trees), Dick's Dam Park (192 trees), Sunkist Woods (110 potted trees and shrubs) and Taylorwood (600 potted trees and shrubs). In 2014, 35 large native trees were planted in Foundry Park to replace ash trees lost to the Emerald Ash Borer.
Why not join your local horticultural society this year and support local environmental and conservation projects? BDHS members get free admission to the BDHS Horticultural Speakers Series where they receive information about best practices in gardening to protect health and landscape investments. Members are eligible for discounts at local nurseries and tree care companies.
BDHS's first meeting of 2015 will start at 7:30 p.m. March 17 at the Caledon Seniors Recreation Centre, 7 Rotarian Way, Bolton. Annual membership is $20 single and $30 for a family.
