Bill Whitbread remembered

By Bill Rea
The Bolton area lost an institution Sunday.
Bill Whitbread, the long-time editorial fixture with the Caledon Enterprise (formerly Bolton Enterprise), died unexpectedly Sunday. He was 78.
Mr. Whitbread was remembered fondly at several local events over the last several days.
Isabelle Bottoms, who worked with him at the Enterprise for about five years in the 1980s, had some words of tribute at Monday's meeting of the Albion-Bolton Historical Society.
“He could type as fast as anybody else with his two index fingers,” she remarked.
“He never forgot a name or a face,” she added. “The ever-observant Bill noticed everything he saw around town.”
“We certainly remember Bill very fondly,” she concluded. “May he rest in peace.”
Mayor Marolyn Morrison also had words of praise for Mr. Whitbread, calling him “a backbone of the Bolton area.”
Speaking at Tuesday's meeting of Caledon council, Morrison commented that Mr. Whitbread was “always there.”
“He used to tease me all the time when I was a school board trustee,” she added. “I really liked him because he had a sense of humour and because he was adorable.”
“He was just so much fun,” Morrison concluded, as she asked the meeting to observe a moment's silence in Mr. Whitebread's memory. “He was a wonderful person.”
Services for Mr. Whitbread are scheduled for today (Thursday) at Holy Family Church, 60 Allan Dr. Bolton at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Caledon Minor Hockey Association, care of Egan Funeral Home.

The park at the corner of James and Victoria Streets in Bolton was renamed in honour of Bill Whitbread in the fall of 1992.
