He shoots, he doesn't score.
Blame it on good goal tending or errant marksmanship, but the Caledon Junior C Bandits just couldn't find the back of the Mimico net in last Tuesday's (June 11) game at Mayfield Arena.
The Bandits didn't play a bad game. In fact, they dominated, especially in the second period, in which the play stayed in the Mimico end for almost the entire frame.
At the end of the first period, the game was tied at one, with the lone Caledon goal scored by Blaine Schmidt.
The second period saw the Bandits continue to put the pressure on the visitors. In fact, the Caledon squad outshot Mimico 28-7, but they just couldn't score. The period ended with neither team being able to take the lead.
Returning for the final 20 minutes, Mimico took a one goal lead early in the period. That was matched by Caledon's Jake Debiasi at the 5:29 mark.
The Bandits took a one-goal lead at 7:55 into the period when Brent Shaw did a nice wrap-around on the Mimico goal.
Mimico tied it up with 4:33 left in the game.
A final Mimico goal with less than three minutes left placed the pressure back on the Caledon squad to close the gap, but they couldn't score before running out of time.
The final score was 4-3 for the visitors.
“It comes down to the little things that made us lose this game,” said Caledon assistant coach Andrew DiMaso. “We made some mistakes and they capitalized on it. In the second period, we out shot them 28-7, and over all we out-shot them 64-32.”
Those mistakes, DiMaso said, included taking too many shots from the outside, leaving the Mimico goalie with plenty of time to react.
“We were getting shots,” DiMarco said, “We weren't cutting through the zone, we had too many outside shots.”
The loss leaves the Bandits with a 3-5 record so far for the season, in sixth spot in the devisions standings.
Returning to Mayfield arena this Tuesday (June 25), the Bandits will host Innisfil.
The game is scheduled for 8 p.m.
