Avian Influenza found in dead geese at stormwater ponds in Bolton, Southfields Village

Risk of bird flu spreading to humans is extremely rare

Bird Flu has been found in dead geese at two locations in Caledon.

On January 24, Town of Caledon municipal law enforcement staff confirmed there were outbreaks of Avian Influenza, commonly known as Bird Flu, at stormwater ponds in Bolton and Southfields Village. 

According to a Town of Caledon news release, the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC) reported the disease came from dead geese. 

There has been no transmission of the disease to humans reported, and the risk of Avian Influenza spreading to humans is extremely rare. 

Still, residents are advised to take sensible precautions. 

Residents should not handle sick or dead wildlife, and likewise keep their pets away from sick or dead wildlife and on a leash.

“To help stop the potential spread of viruses, Caledon Animal Services discourages the use of birdfeeders and recommends the removal of existing ones to limit transmission. Cats should also be kept indoors, and birdbaths on private property should be avoided,” reads the Town's news release. 

Residents are asked to report sick or dead wildlife to the Town by calling 3-1-1.
