Authors will support independent bookstores at Forster’s May 2Authors Kelley Armstrong, Alyxandra Harvey, Karina Sumner-Smith, Carole Staveley, Maria Coletta McLean, and Mary and Steve Runciman will volunteer at Forster's Book Garden May 2 as part of Authors for Indies Day. Throughout the day, the authors will greet customers, recommend books and highlight the importance of supporting independent bookshops in Canada. The goals of Authors for Indies are to increase customer traffic, raise awareness of the importance of independent bookstores, strengthen relationships between authors and booksellers, and showcase local writers. Check out the fun and support this local independent bookstore. Inspired by the successful Indies First campaign in the United States, Authors for Indies started out as a B.C.-based initiative. With help from publishers, the B.C. Booksellers Association, the Vancouver Writers' Festival, and the Retail Council of Canada, the celebration has spread across the country, with more than 400 authors and more than 100 bookstores signed up, and continues to grow! Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series is the inspiration for the TV show Bitten. She also writes young adult paranormal fiction, a very popular reading genre. Harvey is also an author of young adult paranormal fiction. She lives in the Orangeville area. Sumner-Smith writes fantasy novels for young adults and adults. Local author Staveley details her experience curing herself of a chronic pain condition and her books tells readers how they can cure themselves too. McLean writes about being Italian in urban Canada with fondness and humour. The Runcimans have produced several children's picture books with CDs that read the book to the child as he/she follows along. Some are original stories, others are retelling of classic folk tales.
