Annual open house and fly-in — Brampton Flight Centre will commemorate 100th anniversary of start of First World War

Join the Brampton Flight Centre (BFC) and Great War Flying Museum (GWFM) for the annual open house and fly-in Sept. 7.
It will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Canadian aviation history will come to life as visitors walk through GWFM, a charitable organization and the only museum of its kind in Canada. Visitors will get a glimpse of wartime history through an impressive collection of First World War combat aircraft, including the Fokker Triplane that was flown by the Red Baron and the SE5 flown by Billy Bishop. Visitors will also witness military re-enactments and learn about the restoration of these treasured aircrafts. Photographs, uniforms and other interesting Great War memorabilia will also be on display. And starting at 11 a.m., replica fighter biplanes and triplanes will fly-by every hour.
Visitors will see a dazzling display of vintage, classic and modern aircraft and have the opportunity to fly a state-of-the-art full motion Redbird simulator. Cadets from the 892 Snowy Owl Squadron, based at the airport, will be on hand to talk about their programs, and the Recreational Aircraft Association will demonstrate their expertise and techniques for building airplanes.
The open house will also feature classic cars and motorcycles, live birds of prey, musical entertainment, face-painting, trackless train rides, balloon animal making for kids and a barbecue.
Other activities include tours of the airport and sightseeing flights. BFC flight instructors and pilots will answer questions about flight training programs and how to become a pilot. Kids and parents will also learn about the Centre's Kids Flight Camps.
BFC is owned and operated by the Brampton Flying Club. The Club was formed in 1946 and relocated to Caledon in 1969. The Flight Centre is an internationally recognized flight-training school and produces many of Canada's top pilots.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, this year's open house will include a special aerial salute, known as the missing man formation, a tribute to those who fell during the Great War. Caledon Mayor Marolyn Morrison will present this solemn salute.
The Flight Centre welcomes one and all for this day of community celebration and aviation discovery. Admission is $5 per person or $20 per family, and parking is free. All proceeds go to support the Great War Flying Museum.
