Anniversary of discovery of insulin to be marked

Sir Frederick Banting is remembered today as one of the co-discoverers of insulin.
The 92nd anniversary of the discovery will be marked as Banting Day/World Diabetes Day. The commemoration will include an event Nov. 9 at 5116 Sir Frederick Banting Rd. in Alliston. It will run from 2 to 5 p.m.
The event will also see the official opening of the new Heritage Exhibit building, the latest addition to the evolving Diabetes Management and Information Centre complex.
The day will offer the chance to explore. The exhibit will include paintings, prints and artifacts created by or relating to Banting. The themes will include diabetes prevention, discovery of insulin, and Banting the artist, writer and war hero.
It will also be an opportunity to get tested. Diabetes Outreach Team partners from Stevenson Memorial Hospital/Southlake Regional Health Centre will be on hand conducting the Big Blue Test. People attending will be able to have their blood sugar tested on the spot.
Good health advice and diabetes information will be provided by representatives of the Canadian Diabetes Association, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and pharmaceutical suppliers.
As well, there will be the chance to participate in a silent auction, enjoy musical entertainment by a guest choir and piper, and free refreshments.
The program will conclude at 5 p.m. with the lighting of the historic farmhouse in blue.
