ONE PERSON INJURED IN CALEDON VILLAGE SHOOTING

The Caledon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is conducting an investigation in Caledon Village.

“Officers were called to a residence on Hayleyvale Road at approximately 3:00 a.m. on May 3, 2023, where one person was located injured from an apparent shooting,” say Police. “The Caledon Major Crime Unit is investigating and the investigation is in its early stages. No further details can be released at this time. Investigators believe there is no imminent threat to public safety. The OPP reminds all members of the public to be aware of their personal safety at all times.”

Investigators are looking for any potentially relevant dash camera or home surveillance video or photos from around 3:00 a.m. in the area, including on Hurontario Street in Caledon Village. Images and videos can be submitted by visiting: bit.ly/3nnVoZd

IMPAIRED CHARGES

Officers from the Caledon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a driver involved in a collision with impaired operation and assault with a weapon.

“On April 26, 2023, shortly after 11:00 p.m., Caledon OPP responded to a two-vehicle collision on Dixie Road, near King Street, in the Town of Caledon,” say Police. “During the course of the investigation, officers formed grounds that one of the driver's ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol and was subsequently arrested. It was also revealed that an altercation took place between the drivers. No injuries were sustained as a result of the incident.”

Naveen Kumar, 27, of Brampton, was charged with:

Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

Operation while impaired – alcohol

Assault with a weapon

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville on May 18, 2023, to answer to the charges.

The charges have not been proven.

The driver's licence was suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle impounded for 14.

“Motorists are reminded that no amount of alcohol or drugs in your system is safe when driving. If you plan on drinking or consuming drugs, plan to not drive. Instead, arrange for a designated driver, take a taxi or public transit, or come up with another plan that takes impaired driving out of the picture. If you suspect that someone is driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, it is important to call 9-1-1 to report it.”

LETHAL SUBSTANCE WARNING

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is warning people about packages containing a potentially lethal substance that may have been sent to individuals at risk of self-harm in communities across Ontario.

“The packages contain sodium nitrite, which was being sold online and distributed by mail,” say Police.

If you or someone in your home has received a package from the businesses listed below, please contact the OPP or your local police service immediately.

“The ongoing investigation has found that packages may have been sent to more than a dozen communities across the province, as well as other parts of the world. Sodium nitrite is a white, crystalline substance used as a food additive and commonly found in processed meats. Intentional consumption of excessive amounts of this substance can reduce oxygen-levels, impair breathing and can result in death.

“The OPP is calling on everyone to be vigilant of the online transactions and activity of family members and the arrival of any unexpected packages in the mail.”

Earlier this week, Peel Regional Police arrested a suspect believed to be responsible for providing this product.
