The Robert F. Hall Wolfpack continues to be a dominant force in high school football after a 47-12 win over the Bramalea Broncos at home field last Wednesday (Oct. 23).
The Wolfpack dominated the play from the beginning, sending a green tide across the gridiron that resulted in six touchdowns, two field goals, and five successful converts for the Hall squad.
Showing the depth of the offensive squad, all the TDs were scored by different players. Wolfpack touchdowns came from quarterback Jake Smith, running back Andre Gordon, linebackers and Jake Sutherland (running for TDs after pass interceptions), tight end Connor Reiners and wide receiver Sheldon Wright.
Place kicker Gabriel Siemieniec managed 11 points, placing five converts between the uprights and kicking two field goals, including a 40-yard effort in the fourth quarter that hit the bullseye and dropped the ball dead centre through the posts.
“Our offence really stepped up today,” Siemieniec commented. “Our defence kept them (Broncos) out until late in the second half.”
The Wolfpack has the benefit of several players who gained experience playing summer league football and brought that background to the RFH squad.
“We’ve got a lot of guys from Orangeville and one or two from New Tecumseth football,” Siemieniec said. “That really helps because we’re already trained, we don’t just go out there and don’t know what we’re doing.”
The Wolfpack have one more regular season game on the schedule, but win or lose they have already assured themselves a spot in the playoffs.
The final regular season game, Siemieniec said, will give the team the opportunity to give some of the young players a chance to hone their skills.
“We’re probably going to work on the second string and try to build the team up,” he observed. “Most of the guys on our team are Grade 12s, and we’ve got to count on the younger guys as well.”
Siemieniec said his ability as a kicker — he rarely misses — comes from a soccer background and personal training.
“I learned from playing soccer and my dad taught me most of it,” he said. “I went to a couple of camps.”
Head coach Jason Sweeney didn’t make any predictions regarding the squad’s chance at winning the championship. He’s maintaining a quiet confidence in his team and the players’ abilities.
Because of their positioning in the division, the Wolfpack will host their first playoff game Nov. 7. The time for that game and the opponent are still to be determined.
