Driver with small children in car

charged with impaired driving

On Wednesday, July 1 at approximately 11:15 p.m., officers from the Community Response Unit (CRU) from the Caledon OPP Detachment received a call for service, advising that a white sedan was travelling southbound on Highway 10, and was crossing into the oncoming lanes.

As the complainant called to report the concerning driving behaviour to police, one of the CRU officers had pulled over the same vehicle for speeding on Highway 10. The vehicle was caught going 127 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

As the officer approached the vehicle, he observed an open beer bottle in a cup holder between the front seats. Two small children, age one and three, were seated in the back with an adult passenger.

While speaking to the driver, the officer detected a strong odour of alcohol on driver's breath. The driver was asked to provide a sample of his breath into an approved roadside screening device, which resulted in a “fail” reading.

The driver was placed under arrest for Operation while Impaired, and transported to the Caledon OPP Detachment, where further breath tests were conducted.

As a result, a 31-year-old driver from Edmonton, has been charged with:

• Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration over 80 mg;

• Speeding,

• Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor.

The accused is expected to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville on September 10, 2020, to answer to the charge.

We all share a responsibility to protect children from harm - driving impaired is dangerous, placing children in the vehicle driven by an impaired driver is incredibly irresponsible. Peel Children's Aid was notified to follow up on the incident.

The identity of the accused was withheld to protect the identity of the children involved.
