The Town of Caledon is looking to hire a climate change specialist.

The specialist will be responsible for supporting, monitoring and implementing the Town of Caledon’s climate change adaption and mitigation strategies.

“The climate change specialist position has been an existing role within the energy and environment division, since 2014, which will support ongoing and new energy and environment projects,” said Parm Chohan, communications advisor for the Town of Caledon. “The successful candidate will largely focus on updating the Town’s Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies in 2019 and 2020.

The specialist also be involved in community initiatives to increase adaptive capacity to extreme and changing weather patterns and reduce community greenhouse gas emission.

The Town was recently among 26 other Canadian municipalities to complete the Partners for Climate Protection program, a five-step milestone program through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities for local action planning on greenhouse gas emission.

The Town’s Climate Change Task Force developed a Community Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP). The CCAP will include actions and strategies for reducing community-wide greenhouse gas emissions and improving the adaptive capacity and resiliency of the community to cope with and adapt to the local impacts of climate change, according to the Town.

“The specialist will assist in updating the existing plan, which will include strategies to further mitigate the contributions to climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and identify opportunities to adapt and improve resiliency to a changing climate,” said Chohan.

The CCAP looks into transportation, green development, energy, schools, agriculture, community awareness, tree planting and naturalization, waste, local food and long-term actions. They found community transportation represented 37 per cent of total emissions, followed by energy usage from residential buildings at 21 per cent and energy usage from commercial buildings at 16 per cent.

This role will also be responsible for facilitating the community climate change action plan,” said Chohen. “The key to the success of this plan update and the long-term implementation will be partnerships and ownership from external agencies, residents, businesses, not for profit groups and other important stakeholders.

The specialist will also prepare and submit grant applications to leverage federal and provincial funding to implement climate change adaptation and mitigation projects, according to the Town.

The Town is looking for a candidate with three to five years related experience in environmental management and community-based climate change mitigation and adaption. They also must have demonstrated knowledge of federal and provincial climate change policies and legislation, among many other required skills.
