Caledon East and District Historical name new president

Written By JOSHUA SANTOS

You may have read her work published in the Caledon Citizen over the past couple of months.

Kira Wronska Dorward will further her involvement with the community as president of the Caledon East and District Historical Society.

“I thought it was a travesty that this was going to fold simply because nobody was stepping up,” said Wronska Dorward, president of the Caledon East and District Historical Society. “I just couldn't let it happen on my watch.”

“I've always been a big believer in the importance of history. Caledon has such a rich history on its own, that It would be a terrible for this to go out of existence simply because the older members of the executive are too tired to take on the responsibility.”

The group was going to disband because they couldn't find anybody to take over work of the current members. They've also struggled with recruiting new members, let alone, executive members.

She takes over the work of past-president Donna Davies, who has been helping her transition into the role of president.

“We've been planning the meetings ever since I stepped up at the beginning of January, deciding who we want as speakers. I've taken over the designing of posters already and contacting potential speakers, but I've also started a Facebook group.”

Guest speakers will discuss artefacts, voting, archives among many other topics.

“On April 24, we have a meeting that is being run by our speaker Alison Hird,” said Wronska Dorward. “She was a museum collections manager at the Dufferin County museum and one for many years. She is going to share her expertise. She is passionate about spreading the word of the importance of documenting the story behind artefacts. People's personal and family artefacts.”

Robyn Innis has been elected as vice-president, Laura King is the secretary, Chuck Davies is a treasurer, Cecile Weber is a member and the executives are Kelly LaMere-Boone, George Judge, Fred Julian, Christina Heighton and Betty Ward.

Wronska Dorward said she heard about the opportunity to be president after her father, who is also a member of the society, told her they were going to fold. He said she would be a perfect fit as president.

Wronska Dorward has a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in History (with Distinction) from Trinity College in the University of Toronto (UofT), and a Masters of Arts in History degree from the same institution.

“I'm very familiar with the process of running these types of organizations in terms of constitutions, elections and how they work,” said Wronska Dorward. “We really have everything planned except for the November meeting,” said Wronska Dorward. “That's too far into the future for me to comment on right now.”

All meetings are on the last Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at St. James Anglican Church in Caledon East.

All the information about future meetings will be posted on the Caledon East Historical Society Facebook. Check the website and Facebook page for more updates.
