Caledon Citizen reporters and I will try to cover a wide range of events, programs and meetings you need to know about. The New Year is shaping up to be a busy one in Caledon. Here are a few stories we will be chasing.

Proposed asphalt plant in Bolton: 

An asphalt plant is proposed by MJJJ Developments Inc., a subsidiary of Dig-Con International Ltd. The company wants to build a facility on the east side of Coleraine Drive, south of George Bolton Parkway and Parr Boulevard. It is planned to include two-stories and a 1042 square metre office building. 

In order to build the plant, the company asked the town to amend their official plan and zoning bylaws to allow the 6.87-acre development on 12415 Coleraine Dr. 

The company held an open house in October, discussing the proposal and intent however a Town sanction open house is scheduled for Jan. 15. 

The plan has received much negative feedback becoming an election issue in 2018. A number of online petitions have also circulated online hundreds of signatures from residents. 

Cannabis stores in town: 

The Citizen will be covering town council as they decided whether or not to host a retail cannabis store in the community. 

The Province has issued a one-time window to allow municipalities to opt in or out of hosting cannabis retail stores with a deadline set for Jan. 22. If the town agrees to host, the provincial government will provide some incentives. If they opt-out, they can opt in at a later date but lose out on provincial money.

Mayor and councillors have stated it may be best to opt out at this time, to gather more information, as legalization is relatively new to the province, however administration was tasked to provide more information for a final vote scheduled later this month. 

Bolton Fire Hall

Construction at the north hill fire hall is scheduled to be completed in the spring. 

Station 302, housed on the north west corner of the intersection of Cross-Country Boulevard and Queen Street on Regional Road 50, the 21,700 square foot fire hall was originally scheduled to be completed by late 2017.

The Town obtained Mettko Construction Limited “to assist with the management of the construction.”

Pegah Construction Ltd. Was removed from the project bringing in Mettko to complete some work. The facility had an original budget of $7.5 million.
