The Caledon Agricultural Society hosted its 26th annual Caledon Canada Day Strawberry Festival. The opening ceremonies for the festival included this flag raising. Stan Dacres of the Agricultural Society assisted Larry Weltz and Steve Hayward of the Alton branch of the royal Canadian Legion in getting it aloft. Dufferin-Caledon MP David Tilson brought greetings to the Strawberry Festival at the Caledon Fairgrounds. Dufferin-Caledon MPP Sylvia Jones had her usual Canadian trivia question for Canada Day; What were the four provinces that came together to form the country in 1867? Caledon Mayor Allan Thompson welcomed people to Saturday's festival at the Fairgrounds. Peel Dufferin Queen of the Furrow Caleigh Van Kampen brought Canada Day greetings from the Peel-Dufferin Plowmen's Association. Wayne Copeland and Bill Morrison were representing the Credit River Metis Council in Caledon village Saturday. Members of the Marion Drexler Band provided entertainment on the stage at the Fairgrounds. Scott Rowe, the Country Saw, of Cookstown was demonstrating his wood carving skills at Albion Hills. Bubba the Clown and Mrs. Bubba were making balloon toys for the young folks. Dan Morrison of Kingsport Environmental Falconry Services was holding up Eddie, a three-year-old great horned owl, for all to see. A strawberry Festival like the annual one held at Caledon Fairgrounds needs lots of strawberries, and they were there. Angie Saylors and Tammy Coyne were among those serving them. There were lots of hungry diners at Downey's Farm Market's annual Strawberry Festival for the pancake breakfast. Ian Downey, Tim Shannon and Scott McKay were working at the grills to keep up with the demand. There were many interesting things to see and do at the festivities at Albion Hills Conservation Area. Bubbleology is the art of making big bubbles, and Cambridge resident Sandra Lemieux, of Bubbleology Show Canada was impressing a lot of people. What's a birthday party without birthday cake? There was lots of it at Downey's. Marg Mitchell and Maggie Armstrong were busy serving it. Several men at the were playing Kabaddi, a game originating in South Asia and India, at the Fairgrounds. There was lots of fun to be had at the petting zoo at the Fairgrounds. Emily Barrie, 3, of Bolton had this critter eating out of her hand. Town Crier Andrew Welch led this parade onto the Fairgrounds for Saturday's opening ceremonies. There were interesting animals brought to the festival by Alabaster Acres near Caledon village, including this rabbit. Bolton area resident Isabella Furtado, 5, was making friends with it while her brothers Joey, 14, and Joshua, 11, watched. The Caledon Concert Band, under the direction of Robert Kinnear, performed at the opening ceremonies at the Fairgrounds, including leading the singing of O Canada. The Presswood Magic Show attracted a lot of attention at Albion Hills. Abigail Pearce, 3, of Bolton was having fun on the pony ride. Canadian Tire had an area at Albion Hills filled with interesting things to try. Stacey Last of Mono Mills was trying heer hand with the Wheel Challenge. Chanda and Frank Leahy of Rhythmfoot from Orangeville were joined by their children Xavier, Aliyah, Mariah, Savannah and Julayna to perform some of their traditional and upbeat music. Lesley Jensen of Pawsitively Pets introduced Abeer Mir, 8, of Etobicoke to this ball python named Raffi at Albion Hills.Photos by Bill Rea There were performing dogs at the Fairgrounds from Team K9. Lori Leslie of ValleyWood had Izzy demonstrate some basketball skills.
