Beware of telephone fraud

April 3, 2017   ·   0 Comments

Area police are crediting a potential victim for picking up on an attempted case of telephone fraud.
Nottawasaga OPP reports hearing from an elderly man Saturday regarding a call he had received.
In this call, the victim heard from a con-artist claiming to be his son. The caller went on to say that he had been in an accident, had been arrested by police and needed money immediately to get a lawyer. The caller also requested that the victim did not contact anyone else in the family.
The victim called his son’s cell phone and was able to verify that he was okay and was not in jail. The victim then realized that the phone call was a scam and contacted police.
Police are reminding people that knowledge is power, and that there are steps that can be taken to defend against becoming victims of fraud, such as never giving out personal information over the phone or over the internet.
If you or someone you know suspect they’ve been a victim of fraud, contact police.
