Rotary Club of Palgrave’s Weekly Rotary Minute

By Mike Gauthier
When do you become a Rotarian?
Many people and in fact many members of Rotary Clubs around the world feel that a person becomes a Rotarian on the day they join their local Rotary Club, get their Rotary pin, name badge and a couple of plaques outlining Rotary's ethical standards of “The Four Way Test” and “The Objects of Rotary.”
This is not when one becomes a Rotarian. This is when one becomes a member of a Rotary Club.
You only become a Rotarian when you truly connect with the good that you and your Rotary Club is doing in the world.
When you make the delivery of emergency frozen meals to seniors being served by Meals on Wheels, or when you help in restoring a playground at a women's shelter or when you are presenting dictionaries to Grade 3 students — that is when you have the chance to be a Rotarian.
A lot of members of Rotary say that when they first participated in an international project such as a Polio Plus Immunization Day in a far off country or helped deliver school supplies in Central America that is when they became a Rotarian.
I am sure that is the case, but don't forget that you don't have to go on an expensive trip or invest piles of money to become a Rotarian. You can and do become a Rotarian by being engaged and helping out others by doing good in your local community as well as around the world.
Please visit www.rotaryclubofpalgrave.com for more information on our club (or call Ian Kittle at 905-583-0580 for more information on becoming a member) and all the wonderful ways you could get involved.
