The Caledon Golden Hawks first winning streak of the season came to an end Sunday at the hands of the Orillia Terriers in Caledon East.
Coming off back-to-back wins, the club’s first two since winning their season opener back in September, Caledon’s offensive approach fell short in a 3-2 effort.
The score remained deadlocked at zero for most of the opening period, before Caledon’s Jason Cumbo was beaten by Orillia’s Kyle Fischer.
Kevin Pleasance scored his seventh of the year early in the middle frame, adding to the breakout year the defenceman is having in his third season as a Hawk.
Both teams traded a goal apiece before second intermission, Caledon’s off the stick of Jeffrey Ohashi, for a 2-2 tie.
It was Orillia’s Jake Shaw who scored the game winner with less than seven minutes to go in the third period, allowing his team to hold onto the lead for the remainder of the game.
Shaw has been a key component of the Orillia offence, having previously led the Terriers in scoring in 2013-14 before two years of junior B hockey. Since rejoining the Terriers this season, the Coldwater native has scored 28 points in 17 games, good for the top 10 in the league in scoring.
Caledon captain Nicholas McNutt, who assisted on Ohashi’s second period goal, leads the Hawks at a point-per-game pace through 19 matches.
The standings remain largely untouched at the end of the ninth week of the season, with Caledon remaining eighth out of the eight-team Carruthers division with a record of 3-15-1. Their closest opponent, the Penetang Kings, remain six points up on the Hawks after two losses over the weekend.
The Alliston Hornets remain the team to beat, followed closely by the Stayner Siskins, with both teams combining for only four losses in total this season.
Up next for the Hawks is a battle with the Hornets on the road, who were proven to be human in a loss to the Schomberg Cougars over the weekend. Alliston was unbeaten through 18 games this season prior to the loss.
The division’s first and last place teams will duke it out at New Tecumseth Rec Centre Friday in the start of a busy weekend for the Hawks. They then visit the Terriers in Orillia Saturday. They have three wins against the Hawks already this season.
Sunday’s weekly home game closes out the weekend with a tilt between the Hawks and the Kings, with their last contest going in the Hawks’ favour in early November.
Puck drop is set for 6:30 p.m. at Caledon East.
