From Queen’s Park by Sylvia Hones MPP — Remembrance Day to be marked in Dufferin-Caledon

October 31, 2016   ·   0 Comments

November’s poppy campaign and Remembrance Day is a time to honour those who serve and have served at home and abroad, as well as to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our nation.
That is why communities and organizations across Canada hold Remembrance Day services — to remember the fallen and thank those who have served and currently serve in the Canadian Forces.
Throughout our nation’s history, Canada’s military has served in many capacities domestically and around the world, in both war and peacetime. Whether it is on the frontlines of war, as peacekeepers, as security, training or helping with disaster relief, our service members have always been ready to serve whenever called on the land and sea or in the air.
There are a number of Remembrance Day services taking place throughout Dufferin-Caledon.
The Town of Caledon will be holding a service with a parade Oct. 30 at 12:45 p.m. that will begin at Town Hall on Old Church Road and will march to the Caledon East cenotaph.
The Alton Legion and the Bolton BIA will be holding their Remembrance Day services Nov. 6. In Alton, the parade assembles at 10 a.m. at the Legion, 1267 Queen St. In Bolton, the parade will leave the Fire Hall on Ann Street and make its way to the cenotaph on Centennial Drive where the service will begin at 1 p.m.
Nov. 11 services include the Shelburne Legion, the Orangeville Legion, the Town of Grand Valley, and in Mansfield. The Shelburne service begins at 10 a.m. at the Legion hall, followed by a parade to the cenotaph where an outdoor service will commence in front of Town Hall. In Orangeville, the parade will leave the Legion on John Street at 10:15 a.m. and assemble for an 11 a.m. service at the cenotaph in Alexandra Park.Additionally, Legion members observe a sunset service at Forest Lawn Cemetery beginning at 2 p.m. A service in Grand Valley will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the cenotaph, Amaranth and Main Street, and if it is inclement weather, the parade will gather at the arena. The Mansfield service, organized and directed by the Mansfield Women’s Institute, will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the Mansfield cenotaph at 937016 Airport Rd.
Additionally, many schools, service organizations, work locations and churches will be conducting their own services or memorials in recognition of Remembrance Day. Please take some time this November to remember and honour all of those who chose to fight for our freedom. Lest we forget.Official Sylvia Jones MPP Portrait - Spring 2013
