Rotary Club of Palgrave’s Weekly Rotary Minute

Two weeks ago, I was having my hair cut in Bolton when I came to face-to-face with a female customer in the salon.
The woman peered at me and asked me if I was part of Rotary. I replied “yes.”
She introduced herself as Sindy from Palgrave Baseball. She recognized me from the Aug. 17 baseball skills competition at Palgrave Park. That night, I was wearing a bright yellow Palgrave baseball sports jersey with my Rotary hat. I was joined that evening by three other Rotarians as we cooked and served hotdogs and refreshments from the Palgrave Rotary Chuck Wagon to more than 100 girls and boys and their parents. The event was a huge success.
Baseball was a big part of my life when I was growing up in Kingsville and I was proud to serve the group, to watch them play on the baseball diamonds and to support their theme that “these kids are going pro.”
Sindy thanked us for our financial support and our strong working relationship. She indicated that we had made a difference for youth baseball and for her son Carter. My day was made! As I smiled with a profound sense of joy, I encouraged her to continue to build the baseball program in our community.
That’s when it hit me like a home run. I never hit a home run in all those years that I played baseball, but now I know that I have. I now truly understood what service means to our community and the magic of Rotary to make the world a better place through ongoing humanitarian efforts and education programs.
