Editorial — Caledon still has five voices at Region

There is an effort to reduce Caledon’s representation at Peel Regional council, meaning residents and officials have to be vigilant.
But the news isn’t all bad, at least not yet. For one thing, Regional council voted last week in favour of Caledon keeping its five seats, although Mississauga City councillors have the power to veto that, and have stated they will use it.
While we agree representation by population is a perfectly reasonable goal to strive for when determining how many councillors should go where, it is not the only one. Representation by area is an important consideration too, and one which is frequently practised.
Prince Edward Island, for example, has less than 0.5 per cent of Canada’s population, but about 1.18 per cent of the seats in the House of Commons. And there seems to be no call to change that.
In the end, the decision on how council seats are going to be distributed will be made by the Province. We hope MPPs take note that Brampton sided with Caledon’s position in last Thursday’s vote. We also hope they note the traditions that seem to have served Peel well for more than 40 years.
