Don’t forget you’re supposed to stop for school buses

Caledon OPP are reminding motorists that they are supposed to stop for school buses when their red signal-lights are flashing.
Police report there have been complaints about vehicles failing to stop for school buses.
The Highway Traffic Act (HTA) states that when a driver meets a stopped school bus with overhead red signal-lights flashing on a highway, other than one that has a median strip, “shall stop before reaching the bus and shall not proceed until the bus moves or the overhead red signal-lights have stopped flashing.”
HTA adds that every driver who is approaching a stopped school bus from the rear with its overhead red lights flashing, “shall stop at least 20 metres before reaching the bus and shall not proceed until the bus moves of the overhead red signal-lights have stopped flashing.”
For a first offence, a driver can be fined from $400 to $2,000 and lose six demerit points.
