One of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements of business is “The Four Way Test,” which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as President of Rotary International). Herbert crafted The Four Way Test when he was asked to take over a company facing bankruptcy.
Herbert thought he needed to develop something for this organization which their competitors would not have in equal amount. He, along with his crew, decided that it should be the character, dependability and the service mindedness of their personnel.
They believed that, “In right, there is might,” and they determined to do their best to always be right. There needed to be a simple measuring stick of ethics which everyone in the company could quickly memorize.
Considerable time was spend in developing four short questions which now make up The Four Way Test:
1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build good will and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
The Four Way Test was adopted by Rotary in 1943 as a pillar of all that we do.
