Too many signs and billboards

November 15, 2015   ·   0 Comments

The following letter is regarding an application for a sign variance at 8962 Patterson Sideroad (Palgrave Public School).
I strongly object to a sign being placed anywhere in town, but especially at the proposed location.
Signs and billboards along roads and highways contribute to distracted driving as much as texting and phoning while operating a vehicle; and this, placed right in front of a school, is quite irresponsible. Contrary to what some may believe, not all pupils are being bussed. A good number of them actually walk home, supported by the fact that a school crossing guard has been placed there.
Moreover, citizens are really inundated, if not bombarded, with ads and messages in all walks of life any time of day and night, and it really behooves us to stick to our own liberally-set limits and not succumb to applications of variances; for the safety of the school children and our own sanity.
It would also be precedent setting to other business establishments who will demand equal consideration, and of course further erode the rural character of our community.
Wulf Graunitz,
Palgrave
