RCMP warn Ontario residents of telephone scam

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Ontario is issuing public notice with respect to fraudulent telephone calls.
RCMP is warning of fraudulent telephone calls, in which the caller identifies themselves as an RCMP officer calling to collect fines, income taxes or a variety of other scam tactics. The callers inform the victims they must pay immediately or they will be arrested within 24 hours. In most cases, the number for RCMP appears on the victim’s call display.
These types of telephone scams are designed to create such shock and anxiety that victims respond by sending money quickly in order to fix the problem.
Be aware that RCMP does not contact individuals for the purpose of collecting fines or taxes
The RCMP is warning the general public of this activity.
Those who have received similar telephones calls or who know of someone who has is asked to contact their local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
