How long will baby boomers wait for long-term care?

May 20, 2015   ·   0 Comments

The following letter, addressed to Dufferin-Caledon MPP Sylvia Jones, was submitted to the citizen for publication.
My sister and I lovingly take care of our almost 90-year-old mother who has dementia.
She has to be watched and cared for 24 hours a day.
Our mother is not the issue. The issue is that she has been on a waiting list for long-term care for almost a year, without signs of being accepted any time soon.
I do no want, or expect, my children to put their lives on hold when we need help. We are baby boomers. How long will the wait be for us? Should we send in our applications now? How many families in the Dufferin-Caledon area are “waiting to pay” for parents to be looked after professionally, safely and with love at this very moment?
This problem will not be going away. Are there plans in place for new care homes to be built to adequately accommodate the elderly in the very near future?
Jan Ryan,
Bolton
