Etobicoke General — Important milestone reached in hopsital redevelopment

William Osler Health System continues to make great progress in the transformation of Etobicoke General Hospital, moving steadily toward construction of the facility’s new four-storey wing.
Infrastructure Ontario and Osler recently released a request for proposals (RFP) to the three teams short-listed to design, build, finance and maintain the new wing.
As part of a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) process, three teams were short-listed in March. The teams were chosen based on their development, design, construction, financial and facilities management experience, and their capacity to undertake a project like this one. The three short-listed companies invited to bid are EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare, Etobicoke Healthcare Partnership and Plenary Health.
“This means that we are one step closer to transforming Etobicoke General Hospital and ensuring families have access to the services they rely on, like emergency, critical care and women’s and children’s care,” said John Davies, chair of the Osler Board of Directors. “Over the last 43 years, there have been dramatic shifts and increases in Osler’s patient volumes and acuity and, in the community itself. What has only grown stronger is the commitment of the staff, physicians and volunteers who work tirelessly to provide care, treatment and support to those we serve.”
Etobicoke General, which opened in 1972, is undergoing significant revitalization to meet the growing demands of its community. The new four-storey wing will add approximately 250,000 square feet of space to the hospital and house the services most urgently needed by the community it serves. Some features of the project include:
• A larger, state-of-the-art emergency department.
• Cardiac Care and Intensive Care Units.
• A maternal newborn unit with birthing suites and a specialized nursery.
• A new ambulatory procedures unit.
• Cardiorespiratory and neurodiagnostic services
“When it comes to Etobicoke General, Osler’s vision of ‘patient-inspired health care without boundaries’ will lead us to help change the face of health care in this community for generations to come,” said Osler President and CEO Matthew Anderson. “Together with our partners and with the significant support of the Ontario government, we are transforming this hospital and positioning Osler on the leading edge of health care delivery in this region and beyond.”
To prepare the 42-year old building and systems for the new addition, Osler will soon be starting its Early Works project. This includes replacing existing chillers, upgrading the heating plant, upgrading the normal and emergency power distribution systems, providing structural modifications to support the mechanical system upgrades and providing integrated building systems connections for the new addition. Osler is also upgrading the western hydro lands parking areas to create more parking spaces, improve traffic flow and enhance safety.
Osler is also in process of planning for the construction of a new Ancillary Services Building on the site of the Etobicoke General Hospital. This building will house a number of outpatient programs/services and also allow Osler to foster new partnerships with other complementary organizations for innovation and education.
